Why did I come to this movie again?

A few friends had seen it, and said it was cute. The film bragged to be by the same people who did Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. That’s enough to sell me.

Characters

Other than the dad, who I wanted to smack the entire movie, the characters were good. They each took a bit of an emotional journey—although some were literally rammed down the audience’s throat—that made sense.

Did I care what happened?

Yes. The premise and style were totally ridiculous, but I did want to see what happened. I wasn’t glued to the screen—I probably picked up my phone half a dozen times through the show—but I didn’t wander off, so that’s good. I’d say it was predictable.

Plot Holes

There were a few. Of course now I don’t remember them, but I was grumbling about them under my breath. Granted this is basically a super hero movie, so I give some leeway for that.

How many times did I yawn?

This is going to sound strange. I suffered from the show being too fast paced. They rarely gave us a moment of respite from the chaos that is the Mitchell family, and that actually made me tired. I yawned more than once, but not because the show was slow.

Cool Factor

The style of this movie is very different. I felt like it was specifically marketed for the kids of this generation and not me. Which is fine, it is a kid’s movie. That being said, the effects were fun, the animation good, and I was impressed with the cinematography more than once.

The End

The end of the robot apocalypse? Not bad. I felt like the show took the abilities of the characters way too far, but that might just be me.

The end of the emotional arc of the characters. Meh. Again, it felt shoved down my throat.

That being said, the end was satisfying, and kids will love it.

Overall Enjoyment

Oh my goodness, the rest of the review is waffling a bit, but I laughed out loud a bunch of times in this show. The end, where her dad is trying to subscribe to her YouTube station, almost had me in tears. So I enjoyed watching it, but I won’t be watching it again. I’d recommend it to pretty much anyone once.

Thunder Force

In a world where supervillains are commonplace, two estranged childhood best friends reunite after one devises a treatment that gives them powers to protect their city.

Why did I come to this movie again?

A few friends had seen it, and said it was cute. Funny. Cheesy. They warned me not to expect too much.

Characters

The characters were fine. Lydia is waaaaay over the top, but never pretends to be anything different. Emily is a brianiac who is more interested in revenge than people. (She calls it helping, but it’s really revenge.)

The bad guy, along with his henchmen, were ridiculous. Jason Bateman was both terrible and awesome.

Basically, the characters were everything I expected, but remember, my expectations were low.

Did I care what happened?

Somewhat. I wanted to see the friends reconciled. I wanted to see middle-aged woman who were not the Hollywood standard kick butt. I wanted to laugh.

All of those things happened. As for the plot, it was a bit too much by the numbers, even for me.

Plot Holes

Honestly, I’d suspended my disbelief until the very end, and when this thing happens I was like, “What? That’s dumb. That doesn’t even make sense!”

The normal superhero plot holes were fine, this one at the end was annoying.

Cool Factor

Considering people showing super-human powers has been done so much, there weren’t any real “wow” moments in that regard.

The filming was fun. The special effects were good. The humor was as cheesy as I expected. I really liked the premise, so I’ll give that to the cool factor.

The End

Besides the incident with the bomb at the end, it was fine. No surprises when the daughter gets involved, and the characters changed just enough to show that they had an emotional arc.

Overall Enjoyment

The cheesiness was amazing. Like, don’t watch this show unless you’re ready to laugh your butt off at the stupidity of it all. Perhaps there should be some alcohol or a lack of sleep involved.

Jason Bateman as the crab guy actually stole the show for me. He killed it.

Also, I’ve had You Belong to the City by Glenn Frey in my head for a couple of days. The dancing scene between Lydia and Crab Man was literally the best part of the show!

Godzilla vs. Kong

The epic next chapter in the cinematic Monsterverse pits two of the greatest icons in motion picture history against one another – the fearsome Godzilla and the mighty Kong – with humanity caught in the balance.

How I would rate the first three movies of the series:

Godzilla:
4 out of 5 It was pretty much what I expected. There was some great filming in it.

Kong: Skull Island:
4 out of 5. Again, pretty much what I expected when I watched it.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters:
3 out of 5. The humans were too stupid. I kept yelling at them and hoping the monsters would step on them. A bit heavy-handed on “saving the planet.” The monster fights were awesome.

Why did I come to this movie again?

Because I wanted to see monsters fighting monsters. There was a distinct lack of this during the first half of the movie. Then it got better.

Plot Holes

Uh, this is a monster movie. The plot holes are usually bus-sized. In this case, aircraft-carrier-sized. Most of them I can forgive, because the movie didn’t promise anything different.

I do have to balk at the point where spilling a drink on the computer won they day. Pretty sure computers don’t work like that. Not when there are servers. And backups. And why were there vents right there by the keyboard?

Also, how can you not notice a sky-scraper-sized monkey learning sign language?

There were epic fights of monster on monster. Spoiler: there’s even a giant robot. Sort of. This movie totally delivered on the cool stuff.

Overall Enjoyment

My brother-in-law was ranting about how bad this movie was, which set me up with very low expectations. So when I watched it I was like, “Meh. It wasn’t that bad.”

Except the Millie Bobby Brown stuff.

Don’t get me wrong, she did great, but the story arc with her character and the group she ends up with was beyond dumb.

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things Review

Quick-witted teen Mark is contentedly living the same day in an endless loop when his world is turned upside-down by the mysterious Margaret, also stuck in the same loop. What follows is a love story with a fantastical twist, as the two struggle to figure out how – and whether – to escape their never-ending day.

Why did I come to this movie again?

Not going to lie, we watched this on Valentine’s Day weekend. I sort of picked it to torture the hubby, but also because it looked intriguing.

Characters

Remember, this is a young adult romance, so the characters have teenage problems with teenage attitudes.

Mark is a typical self-absorbed young man who’s been living his own Groundhog’s Day and hasn’t quite reached the point where Bill Murray decided to help other people because it’s the right thing to do. I quite liked Mark. He grew, figured a few things out, and is funny.

Margaret is living in the same Groundhog’s Day loop, and seems reluctant to let Mark into her life, despite the fact that they have forever together. I guessed her story from the beginning, but still felt all the emotions when we finally got to see the truth.

All in all, I thought the characters were good.

Did I care what happened?

Yes. At the very beginning I wasn’t sure if I liked Mark or not, but that settled pretty fast. I liked Margaret because Mark liked her. I was invested in what happened to them.

Plot Holes

Of course there are some plot holes, this story is essentially about time travel. That being said, I didn’t dwell on any of them.

I loved that they straight-up compared their circumstances with Groundhog’s Day and The Edge of Tomorrow. Totally making fun of their own trope.

As I said above, I guessed the end near the beginning, but that’s not unusual for me. The writers did such a great job with the story that I still get choked up when Mark had his revelation and we saw Margaret’s real issues.

Cool Factor

Normally a movie like this wouldn’t have much of a cool factor, but the twist at the end was pretty cool. The writers did a really good job tying things together, tugging on heart strings, and keeping me invested.

Good movie. A bit of teen angst, a bit more language than I like (although it was still wasn’t bad), and a interesting twist.
