Books I Read in December

Well, despite the holidays, December went better than I thought it would.

I read/listened to four books in December.

That’s 47 total for the year.

I didn’t make my 50 book goal.

Unless…

I count the three books I wrote this year, that I had—for obvious reasons—to read in their entirety multiple times.

If I count those, then I did it!

Or almost did it.

I can’t complain about reading/listening to 47 books this year. That’s a good number, and I feel like I branched out into some genres I don’t usually go for.

Cozy-ish Fantasy
What I liked:
I loved everything about the village. The people, the culture, the sense of community. The author did a good job with the characters.
What could have been improved:
This is advertised as cozy, but I think it’s a bit darker than that. Also, there was a lot of telling and not showing, which is always a problem for me.
Fantasy
What I liked:
This is a rich fantasy world that book one only gives the reader a glimpse of. Lots of characters and cultures that I’m dying to know more about.
What could have been improved:
The writing style is a bit too info-dumpy for my taste, and the main characters in book one are not the main characters of the series.
Note: This is an older series, and I’m 99% sure I was at a little writing conference with the authors before they launched this book. They told us all about the world, which may have been detrimental to my reading it, because I already know some of the secrets. Shhh…
LitRPG / Portal Fantasy
What I liked:
I enjoyed how the author incorporated someone from our world into a new world and basically gave them a DnD/video game level up system to use to get stronger. The adventures were fun.
What could have been improved:
The main character is a self-righteous jerk who literally thinks that anything that comes from his brain is better than what anyone else, in the history of the universe, could come up with. He sometimes made me want to quit reading this one. I did know this going in (thank you Amazon reviews) so I was prepared.
Zombie Apocalypse
What I liked:
This is our second time through this series and they’re perfect for us to listen to while we drive in the car. The characters are amazing and the plot progression is always fun an interesting. We knew the end of this one and we STILL cried. If you like zombies, military, snark, and a bit of suspending disbelief, check this series out!
What could have been improved:
There are a few sections in this book that felt like the author put them in on a dare, and there were a few other sections that went on a little too long.
Note: While we love this series, it’s not for everyone. The storytelling style is unique, which turns some people off. Maybe try the look inside option before you dive in.
