Lanternfest

Life is about experiences. And I love new experiences (barring eating bugs, running up hills and jumping out of a plane without a parachute).

I’ve been wanting to attend Lanternfest for a while. Where you and your newest 10,000 friends launch paper lanterns into the night in commemoration of loved ones who have passed, dreams you want to fulfill or simply gratitude for what you have been given.

But let me be honest, that lantern scene in Tangled makes me cry like a little girl, and I really wanted to experience it for myself.

So I hijacked a friend (leaving the hubby with his D&D group for the night…because that’s a level of nerdy that I have no desire to compete with) and we headed out.

Obviously, since we were going to be lighting things on fire, the event was kind of in the middle of nowhere. Ish. We parked and joined the crowd of people packing their camping chairs, blankets, snacks and jackets past the race track and to a very large field of gravel.

As an attendee we got a paper lantern, a marker to write or draw on said lantern with, a book of matches, a wooden dowel and stuff for s’mores. There was a bit of standing in line, but it went fast. My friend and I then  joined a handful of strangers around a “fire pit” and we settled in.

My s’mores were delicious, by the way.

Frankly, it was great to just chill out for a while before the sunset.

Then the real fun began.

As you can see from the picture, the lanterns were fairly large. It took a bit of teamwork to get one launched, but it was worth it.

None of my pictures worked out, but I did get a good video.

And I can say, that Lanternfest is an experience that I will probably repeat again next year. If you have a chance to go (and can get tickets early-because they are kind of pricey) do it!
