January Book Update

Tags :

I made the goal to read 30 books this year.

I know, I know, it doesn’t sound like a lot, but I’m pulling a Scotty here and aiming low so I’ll be oh so impressed with myself when I read more than that.

January was a good reading month, but part of that is because I started several of these books in December and didn’t finish until this year.

Here’s the list of books I either read or listened to in January!

Adult Sci-Fi
This AI novella is a quick read. Loved the voice of the character.
Apocalyptic (Nuclear Strike) Fiction
I’m listening to this series, and if you love apocalyptic tropes and lots of tension, these books are for you.
Apocalyptic (Nuclear Strike) Fiction
Did I mention these are pretty short? After book 3 I’m taking a break. I am getting more and more attached to some of these characters.
Sweet RomCom
Hilarious book! He’s grumpy and she’s sunshine. Loads of Christmas fun. If you’re a fan of the genre, read this one!
Adult Military Sci-Fi
Slow start, which isn’t unusual for sci-fi, but once it got going I didn’t want to put it down. Great characters. Besides some dark themes, which work for the story, this book is relatively clean, if that’s something you’re looking for.
YA Fantasy
Delightful story. Awesome characters. Cool magic and lore (taken from European roots) and just the right amount of romance.

The Books I Read in 2022

Tags :

My original goal was to read 25 books in 2022.

I ended up reading, or listening, to 48 books!

I think I’ll up my goal from 25 to 30 for 2023. I’d love to say I’ll have time to get to 50, but in 2022 I had back surgery and was down a lot more than usual. I know that contributed to the total count.

My hope is no more surgeries (crossing fingers).

What are your goals for 2023?

1-16
17-32
33-48

May Book Update

Tags :

Hey all,

I’ve made a goal to read at least two books a month this year.

Sometimes I read a lot of books, and sometimes I don’t.

The following are the books I either read or listened to in May.

I’m actually ahead of my goal so far. (Knock on wood.)
Also, I had back surgery this month, so I did a lot of reading.

Epic Fantasy
I listened to this one. It took me a while because it’s so long.
Not quite as rompy as Larry Correia’s Monster Hunter Series, but a solid, unique world with some awesome characters. I’m totally listening to the next one soon.
(Warning: I didn’t love the narrator on this one.)
YA Urban Fantasy
I picked this one up from the authors at a writing conference a few months ago.
Cool magic system, great location (Ah, Venice), and solid characters. The plot was pretty typical YA Urban Fantasy, but I didn’t mind. The book delivered exactly what I was expecting.
Note: This is a pretty clean book.
Urban Fantasy / Mystery
I listened to this one. It was on sale so I grabbed it.
Please don’t let the iffy cover deter you. The main character has a fantastic voice, the magic system intrigued me, the writer made me laugh, and the mystery kept things very interesting.
YA Contemporary Romance
A bit of Crazy Rich Asians mixed with the movie What a Girl Wants. Good romance. A modern-day fairy tale. Sort of.
Sweet Romance Romantic Comedy
I do love a good princess story. This RomCom had me rolling a couple of times. Awesome chemistry between the characters. Love the author’s voice.
Science Fiction
Someone on my newsletter recommended this to me. It’s got an old-school Star Trek vibe with a super interesting premise. The pacing is slow, just to warn you. A mix between an idea book and a character driven book.
(I only read Star Surgeon)

April Book Update

Tags :

Hey all,

I’ve made a goal to read at least two books a month this year.

Sometimes I read a lot of books, and sometimes I don’t. This year I’m going for consistency.

The following are the books I either read or listened to in April.

I’m actually ahead of my goal so far. (Knock on wood.)

I started this one a few months ago, but the first chapter didn’t grab me, so I put it down.
This time through I got into the kick-butt characters and unique monster hunting style.
If you like a bit of mystery combined with horror check this one out.
I bought this one at a writing conference I attended a few months ago.
It’s a lovely fairy tale with a charming style and a fun mash-up.
Check it out if you’re a fairy tale junkie, and maybe even if you aren’t.
I picked this one up because I know one of the authors. It’s a bit off my beaten path, but it’s been fun and enlightening to read short stories from cultures I know very little about outside of mainstream entertainment.
I find I enjoy it most when I read one or two, put it down for a few days, then go back to it.
If you’d like to expand your cultural palette a bit this one is for you.
