The Batman: Review

When the Riddler, a sadistic serial killer, begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, Batman is forced to investigate the city’s hidden corruption and question his family’s involvement.

Why did I come to this movie again?

I’d heard so many mixed reviews about this movie that I decided I wanted to see it. It makes me curious when my writing friends are divided 50/50 on either loving or hating a film.

Also, I like Batman in general and wanted to see what they’d done with this reboot.

Characters

This is a bit strange, I’ll admit, but I felt more grounded in this Batman movie than any other one before this. I think that’s because I watched a couple of seasons of Gotham and knew more about the crime bosses and the police guys. Because of that I could follow more of what was going on in the city than usual.

Robert Pattinson did okay as Batman. (I was worried) He was awful as Bruce Wayne, but since Bruce’s character was only on screen for maybe fifteen minutes of the entire movie, it was fine. Loved Serkis as Alfred. I didn’t catch it was Colin Farrell under the makeup for Oz.

Paul Dano, who played the Riddler, did a great job.

None of the characters in a Batman movie are new or fresh. This cast meshed well and entertained me.

Did I care what happened?

Yes. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about this movie being slow. I guess I can see it, but I was expecting the slow burn and frankly enjoyed it. There have been a lot of movies bloated with action scenes lately. This is not one of them.

I thought it was fun to see Batman have to do a bunch of detective work and get yanked around by the Riddler for most of the movie. Batman is still young in this film, so he’s a bit slow. Which I didn’t mind.

I was never on the edge of my seat, but I stayed interested.

Plot Holes

It’s a superhero movie. Of course there were plot holes. There was one scene that started out in the day and ended during the night. Not that much time passed. The car chase was totally ridiculous. Stuff like that. In general I only got tossed out of the story a time or two, so that’s not bad.

The clues the Riddler gave were a bit ambiguous for me, but I’m not a mystery person.

How many times did I yawn?

This is a slow Batman movie. It’s also almost three hours long. I didn’t yawn, but the hubby started to drift off a few times, and there were a few things that could have been sped up.

Cool Factor

The shots are beautiful. The cast is great. Even though this isn’t an action-filled Batman movie, it did impress.

I did like the little things like Bruce using his floor as a case board and that coming back later. (no spoilers here)

The End

I liked Batman’s little turn at the end. Riddler in Arkham was meh for me.

Overall Enjoyment

I’ll probably watch this one again, but not in the theater. I had put aside any expectations going in and rather enjoyed the movie.
